Things at random : There is no particular theme to the pictures in this gallery. Think of them as those that do not fit nicely into the established categories. The mix is likely to get eclectic.

The Bear : This is a set of photos that used to live on Flickr and was created for a silly but fun project wherein the same item was to be photographed in 100 different ways. I fizzled out on the project, but liked the pictures enough to want to preserve them here as a gallery for my friends when I moved over to smugmug. I hope you enjoy them. (Some are hi-res, but most were reduced for web viewing.)

One : One: standing for one lens, one set of camera settings.

I got the idea for this gallery from an entry on theonlinephotographer (a blog - links don't seem to want to post in the description here... the article title is "The Leica as Teacher"). The basic idea is to take a simple camera, a simple prime lens of 35 or 50mm size, and a single kind of black and white film and use only that for a full year. The goal is to learn light and get it right without falling into the digital temptation to burn through 1000s of photos seeking the perfect one. While I am thinking the author of the article makes a good point, taking it to the extreme of buying a special camera and lens and then shooting film (at an added cost) is for me impractical. However, the lessons learned from prime shooting and forcing oneself to operate within set limits can make a difference to the quality of pictures taken. So, I am going to give it a try in short bursts over the next little while.

1. camera used = Olympus E-520
2. lens used = Zuiko OM 50mm f1.4
3. in camera settings = jpeg (lsf), monotone, contrast +2, iso=400, wb=auto, colourspace = adobe. I will be using the camera's light meter.

There will be no post processing in lightroom (including crops). Usually, I shoot raw, but in this case I want to work in black and white from the start and want consistent settings and to get it right in camera so the originals will be jpeg. What you see here is straight from the camera.

I hope you all enjoy the results.

Waterloo History scans from film : I went away for the summer of 1993 and came home to discover that my old neighbourhood had been torn down. The old Labbatts plant was about half gone, and most of the Seagrams property was too. It was a big shock visually.
