NaturePhotographers > cunderwood  > Nature > Specific Locations > Columbia Lake (Waterloo) - 2009
It is time to create a gallery devoted to the wildlife of Columbia Lake. This "lake" is part of the flood control for the area, and is on the University of Waterloo Campus. However, it is also the home to a wide variety of wildlife. I have seen Red Tail Hawks, Terns, Sea Gulls, Egrets, Great Blue Herons, Kingfishers, and numerous other birds there. I have also seen some deer. The beautiful thing about it is that it is a 5 minute walk from my front door to the edges of the natural area next to the lake. I have included in this gallery photos taken in the whole nature preserve of which Columbia Lake is but a part.

cunderwood > Cormorant showing off?
This one sat with its wings extended like this for almost five minutes. I am not sure what it was doing.

cunderwood > There is a good story behind this picture.
I was following a cormorant and saw, out of the corner of my eye, this hawk fall out of the sky into some tall grass. The cormorant became less interesting. Since some water was between me and where the hawk touched down, I started moving fast to get around the edge of the water and over to the area the hawk was in. As I got closer, it lifted off from the grass and headed into a stand of trees. It did not leave. So, moving very quietly I circled around the clump of trees and into them. My patience was rewarded when I looked up and saw it sitting in the tree, eating a rabbit. It watched me, but did not seem overly concerned about my presence

cunderwood > Egret in the rain
cunderwood > I have seen the deer in the Columbia Lake area since spring, but this is the first clear shot I have had of them. This doe is actually on the MUP which goes alongside the Environmental Reserve belonging to the University of Waterloo which Columbia Lake abuts. The picture is soft for three reasons - failing light, heavy rain, and a light touch of noise reduction. I live about 300m from where the deer is standing - we love where we live as wildlife abounds right outside the door.
